The Very Popular Doctor Zhivago PrintsDoctor Zhivago is a movie that almost anyone that goes to movies has heard of but, for some reason, if you are not from the generation that saw it when it came out to theaters then you are probably among the large population that has never even seen the movie. But for some inexplicable reason people to this day remember the title of the movie, they place the movie in the Russian winter wastelands, and most people know the name Omar Sharif because of his role in the movie. It is a phenomenon I have never been able to understand and the even stranger thing is that for many movie going people you can show them a Doctor Zhivago poster and they would recognize it before they even got to the title and yet they have never seen the movie. Doctor Zhivago posters, and indeed the movie Doctor Zhivago itself, are able to transcend much of today's popular culture and remain as an image that people can recognize even though they have never seen it before in their lives. While people may recognize the name Omar Sharif you could show just about anyone an Omar Sharif poster or even a Julie Christie poster, Christie also starred in the movie, and most people would not recognize them outside the context of a Doctor Zhivago movie poster. There are a few movies like this one. For example, many people recognize much of the imagery surrounding Gone With The Wind yet many people past a certain age have never seen the movie. The truly strange thing about Doctor Zhivago is that it survives today without a single famous line from the movie and a song that people can barely remember. Today people will still buy a Doctor Zhivago print and you can find Doctor Zhivago prints readily available in any movie or music store. You can really drive yourself crazy trying to understand the popularity of a Dr Zhivago movie poster because there is no basis in behavioral common sense to it. The movie Doctor Zhivago is truly a great movie that absolutely deserves a long and prosperous career but when you see people that have a Dr Zhivago poster on their wall and then they admit they have not only never seen the movie but they have no idea what the movie could possibly be about then it really makes you wonder. There are college kids with Dr Zhivago posters in their dorm rooms and the whole thing is quite puzzling. Perhaps in a film study course they ran across the movie but it really makes you wonder about the attraction to such a seemingly anonymous movie. That is probably how popular culture continues to prolong itself. Some things become icons of popular culture but no one is really sure why but yet the image lives on. It would make for an interesting study in human behavior to see what attracts someone to a movie they have never seen before and have no idea what it is about.
